Richard is originally from Glasgow, Scotland.  He studied a BSc (Hons) Technology and Business Studies, Accountancy & Biotechnology. He worked within the accounting, professional services space both in the UK and in Australia before deciding to take his product knowledge across into the recruitment space, becoming a Banking and Finance Recruitment contract specialist for a Global agency. In 2006 he joined Barton Mills full time and operated within financial services for 10 years. In 2016 Richard moved solely into operations for BMR as well as a number of other start up recruitment businesses. Richard consults to individuals who are looking to open their own recruitment businesses on operational set up and issues.

What do you like about working at Barton Mills?

We are blessed to work with a great team who all genuinely want to do a good job for their clients and candidates.  Everyone wants Barton Mills to be successful and the best agency in the Australian rec2rec space.  Everyone is very supportive of each other.  We definitely enjoy a laugh along the way.  I work remotely a lot of the time now and I miss the banter and comradery in the office.

Which sector do you recruit in?

My background is accounting and finance and this is my specialist area and I still consultant to the team on this space.  However more recently I have stepped into an Ops Management role for BMR and other recruitment businesses.  I consult and advise start-up businesses on operational procedure.

What do you enjoy about working in rec 2 rec?

What I love about recruitment is that it’s a simple equation compared to many other professions.  Put simply – you get out of it what you are prepared to put in.

If you could give your candidates one tip, what would it be?

To be honest. Pure and simple.

What did you do before you worked at Barton Mills?

I moved from Accounting to Recruitment in 2004 and joined Barton Mills in 2006. I’ve never looked back!

What do you like to do when you aren’t recruiting?

I have a beautiful, low maintenance wife, 3 young high maintenance kids and a lazy dog……..and a bunch of single mates that behave like the dog.  When I am free of everything else I like my running training and going to the gym. I love Australia and am proud they do such a great job of organising these running events and triathlons.  My last one was the Hamilton Island Sprint Tri – not a bad place if you are going to do it!

If you could be any other occupation in another life, what would you be?

Top international football player leaving the sport on a high at 25 then becoming Lead Guitarist for AC/DC. I would then have enough cash to pay for a seat on a space rocket…. and of course all the stuff that goes with it…
